The largest protected area outside of the Swedish mountains

Howling wolves can be heard at night

The Malingsbo-Kloten Nature Reserve in southern Dalarna and northern Västmanland is one of the largest nature reserves in Sweden. It is characterized by high hills and deep valleys surrounding a long stretch of excellent paddling water, with steep cliffs descending dramatically into the river along narrow stretches. The wilderness is situated on top of a higher plateau, and the wildlife is diverse. The reserve is home to a large number of moose, deer, and beavers, as well as lynxes, wolves, and bears. However, the chances of encountering lynxes, wolves, or bears are very slim due to their low numbers and their shy nature. Occasionally, the howling of wolves can be heard at night, while moose, deer, and beavers are more commonly seen. The reserve boasts one of the highest moose populations in the world and is one of the few wolf territories in Sweden. None of these animals pose a threat to humans.

The closest wilderness

The beautiful and unspoiled nature reserve is considered the closest wilderness to central Europe: a 2.5-hour drive (200 km) from the Swedish capital, Stockholm. The reserve offers plenty of opportunities for canoeing, biking, and hiking, and is well-maintained. There are numerous rest areas along the trails equipped with sturdy shelters for rain and wind. Each shelter is accompanied by a strong fireplace. The Nordic Discovery's Adventure Center can be found in the small village of Kloten, situated between Skinnskatteberg and Kopparberg along road 233.

What makes the area unique?

The forest has been protected from development since 1950, when the wilderness become a nature reserve which is the reason why the forest has been left in peace and why the wilderness still is a popular retreat for many wild animals. A common sight in the rest of mid Sweden is the presents of vacation houses. The absence of vacation houses and a very rich wildlife makes the nature reserve unique from the rest of central Sweden.
